Add or edit material categories
Define material categories as the first step before adding material items or assemblies. The material category marked as the default will be used when materials are created 'on-the-fly', unless specifically changed.
For each category, you can define a default stock re-order level (D.S.R.L.), that will be applied automatically whenever a new material item is created in that category.
If complex account mapping is enabled in your organisation's configuration, you can also define a Xero account override as shown in the example below.
Each category may be mapped to a separate sale, direct cost (COGS) or expense and current asset account in the accounting system. If there is no selection, the company default account mappings will be used.
Tips:
- Do not make it too complicated. Tidy reports will show much of the management information required, so there is no need to have a complex chart of accounts and P&L
- Use Xeros tracking categories in Tidy to further simplify information presentation for example Region and Customer Type
- Stock on Hand accounts in Xero must be created as current asset accounts. The Xero Inventory account cannot be used, it is a locked account for Xero use only
- The Stock Adjustment account may be a dedicated direct sale account or the same direct sale account as used for COGS
